I watch a weekly hardware tech podcast, called Pcper, and they were covering a topic that I believe applies to Final Fantasy XI.

Are games art? And if they are, is the gaming industry conducive of its existence as art.

I'll be the first to agree that some games were created to just make the sale and be dumped in a closet after a weeks worth of game play and that's fine. I mean some games are just games (a quick diversion).

Some games, though, are on a whole different level in terms of animation, musical score, and literary plot. Anyone who is reading this right now would probably add FFXI into this category and if you don't.. ...why are you reading this lol.

Would like to know if I'm just blowing hot air or if there is something to this.

The section that covers this topic is minute: 28:42 - 38:20

and the full write-up can be seen at http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Editorial/Video-Games-Do-Not-Want-Be-Art
